The manual says every 15hrs, or 100l of fuel. That works out to about every 12 tanks of gas on the EXC. I prefer going by mileage, so I set my Panoram computer for a service reminder every 500 miles (I assume approx. 25mpg just to be even more conservative). TwistiT. Posted December 10, 2007. I came off a XR400 and can safely say that the maintainence is not that bad. Change the oil every 10hrs, filters and valve clearances every 20 and air filter when ever dirty.
Engine. The 500 EXC has a good engine, producing enough power for adventure enduro. It has plenty of bottom end grunt for cruising and explosive power higher up for when you need it for obstacles and whatever. What’s best is that the engine doesn’t seem to be prone to stalling even with lower revs.

The service manual advises to change the oil every 3 hours but is this advised under the assumption that the bike will raced and ridden quite hard, rather than being driven on the road.
